International trade glossary FAQ

What is an international trade term?

An international trade term is a word, abbreviation, document name, or commercial rule used to define product scope, delivery, freight, customs, payment, production, or quality responsibilities between trading parties.

Are Incoterms the same as payment terms?

No. Incoterms define delivery tasks, costs, and risk between seller and buyer. Payment terms define when and how money is paid. A contract or purchase order normally needs both.

Which trade terms should a first-time importer learn first?

Start with RFQ, MOQ, lead time, EXW, FCA or FOB, landed cost, HS code, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, quality control, and the payment method proposed by the supplier.
